DVORÁK, Antonín (1841-1904). Important autograph letter signed to Leo Stern, in English, Prague, 29 March 1896, concerning his 'CELLO CONCERTO and his request to Stern to perform the work for the first time in Prague, black ink, 4 pages on a bifolium, 8vo (202 x 127mm.), (minor tear at central fold).

This letter is written shortly after Dvorák's return to Prague following the première of the 'cello concerto in London on 19 March 1896. Originally written for Hanus Wihan, the work was in fact first performed by the English 'cellist Leo Stern (1862-1904), who was engaged by the London Philharmonic Society when Hanus became unavailable. In his opening sentence, Dvorák refers to this concert and the criticism about it. He goes on to inform Stern that Wihan 'has refused to play the concerto and postponed for a later time.' He begs Stern to come to Prague, initially saying that the Prague Philharmonic will not be able to pay very much, but adding later that they will in fact be able to pay 100 gulden. Knowing that Stern has return tickets to Berlin, Dvorák writes that 'this little trip you can easy do' [sic], and giving him details of when he should be in Prague to rehearse the work for the concert scheduled for 12 April.

The letter is clearly written in a great rush and ends with the heartfelt plea 'Dont disappoint me!' [sic].
