Emile Lessore (1805-76) was born in France and came to England in 1858 after training as a ceramic artist at Sèvres; he worked at Minton for a short period during that year and from there he moved to Wedgwood, the factory with which his distinctive style is mainly associated; the painting on these vases was carried out during his brief sojourn at Minton
