It was at the marriage feast of Peleus and Thetis that the first seeds of the Trojan War were sown. It was held outside the cave of King Cheiron on Mount Pelion and all the Olympian gods attended, Hera raising the bridal torch and Zeus giving the bride away. The goddess Eris, who had not been invited, was determined to disrupt the party and while Hera, Athene and Aphrodite were chatting amicably, she cast among them a golden apple inscribed 'For the Fairest !'. All three goddesses claimed the apple and Zeus instructed Hermes to take them to Mount Ida, where the shepherd Paris would be their judge. It was Paris's fateful choice of Aphrodite and consequent abduction of Helen which provoked the Trojan War
