A MASSIVE MING BLUE AND WHITE JARDINIERE
jiajing six-character mark below the rim and of the period

Vividly painted on the exterior in a deep strong blue with two scaly five-clawed dragons in mutual pursuit divided by a flaming pearl, one dragon with its head turned back towards the other, all amongst cloud scrolls, some damage
30½in. (77.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A jardinière of this date and pattern, but of smaller size, was included in the exhibition, Selected Ceramics from the Collection of Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Hu, Shanghai Museum, 1989, Catalogue no. 21; and yet another example of this pattern is illustrated in Ming Dai Taoci Daquan, p.317. A very similarly decorated slightly smaller jardinière, but with a Wanli mark and of the period, is in the Idemitsu Collection, Catalogue, pl.714
A very similar jardinère from the Alder Manor Collection was offered in our New York Rooms, 2 December 1993, lot 269; and a jardinière of similar size to the present lot and with a Jiajing mark, but painted with Buddhistic lions, was sold in these Rooms, 25 March 1974, lot 136
