Lot Essay
John Marriott Blashfield, fl. 1830-1870. He had been working with Wyatt, Parker & Co. from around the 1840's. Following the Great Exhibition in 1851 he set up his terra cotta works at Mill Wall, Poplar. Here he made Chimney pots, Balustrades and other architectural fittings and embellishments, as well as an assortment of vases, busts, tazzae and figures. In 1855 he published An Account of the History & Manufacture of Ancient and Modern Terra Cotta. He also published various catalogues and price lists (1857). There was a showroom at Praed Street, Edgeware Road.
An auction sale of the stock was held by Rushworth & Jarvis, at Praed Street, on 27 May 1858 and the following two days. In 1868, the factory was situated at Stamford, Lincolnshire. He published in that year, a further catalogue of designs and articles made by them.
