The Tritons forming the stem are reminiscent of earlier pieces made in the workshops of Paul Storr and Rundell Bridge and Rundell, where Flaxman, E. Hodges Bailey and William Theed all worked as designers. It is likely, however, that the designer of this piece is E. Hodges Bailey as he left Rundells along with Storr in 1820 and worked successively for Storr, Storr and Mortimer and Mortimer and Hunt. Similar earlier pieces, however, such as salts, with Triton and rockwork bases are recorded. These ironically date from between 1810 and 1815, made in the workshop of Paul Storr and designed by William Theed, R.A.
