The arms are those of Hamilton of Belhaven and Stanton, quartering those of Hamilton of Udston and Hamilton of Raplock, for Robert Montgomerie Hamilton, 8th Lord Belhaven and Stanton. He was born in 1793 and succeeded to the Scottish dignity, as 8th Baron, at the death of his father in 1814. He married, in 1815, Hamilton, daughter of Walter Campbell of Shawfield. He was Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and a Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire. He was a representative peer for Scotland 1819-31. He was created a peer of the United Kingdom as Baron Hamilton, of Wishaw, co. Lanark in 1831. He died in 1868.
