Lot Essay

Although this piece is made of Britannia Standard silver and marked accordingly it is interesting to note that the date letter is over-striking the Sterling Standard leopard's-head mark. The majority of silversmiths were at this time working in sterling silver and it would appear that a simple mistake of using the wrong punch was rectified by being over-struck with another mark.
