Born in Heilongjiang Province in 1955, Wang Jianan graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China in Beijing, 1982. He founded the first independent art studio in China after the Cultural Revolution. Wang inherited the Mi School techniques of the Song Dynasty, and then developed his own unique formula of mixing water and oil to colour both sides of traditional handmade paper. In 1988, Wang Jianan came to England to work as a professional artist, and has since produced many works.

Wang Jianan's work is represented in the Beijing Chinese Art Association, the Central Academy of Fine Art of China and at Xi'an University. In England, his work may be found in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum and Durham University. His exhibitions include: the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London 1988; Contemporary Chinese Painting Exhibition, London 1988; Royal Academy 221st Summer Exhibition, London Watercolour prize, 1989; a One-man show at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; and at the British Art Fair, Royal Academy of Art, London.

His most recent exhibition, Harmony of Nature in Chinese Art - Wang Jianan and Cai Xiaoli, was held at the Billingham Art Gallery in August-September this year.
