This torchère probably inspired by one of the most famous pieces of Roman furniture, the sacred tripod altar or brazier discovered in 1767 from the Temple of Isis, Pompeii, and now in the Museo Nazionale, Naples (illustrated H. Hayward, World Furniture, London, 1965, p. 18, pl. 34)
