Lot Essay

Pierre-Basile Lepaute (1750-1843) and his nephew Jean-Joseph Lepaute (b.1768) worked in association between 1798 and 1811. Pierre-Basile was himself the nephew of the eminent horologist Jean-André Lepaute (1720-1789), the inventor of the virgule escapement. Pierre-Basile had continued in business after his uncle's retirement in 1789.
