Lot Essay

The design of these candelabra relates to a pair supplied by Claude Galle for the Empress's boudoir at the Petit Trianon in December 1809, at the cost of 600F (D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Grand Trianon, Meubles et Objets d'Art, 1975, vol.1, p. 34). Closer in design to the present lot was a pair attributed to Galle, sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 18 May 1989, lot 12. The base friezes had the same mounts of putti taming lions as the present lot
