The present group is an entirely characteristic example of the type of statue that has come to be known as a 'schöne Madonna'. Another Swabian example is in the Württembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart (Cologne, op. cit., p. 337, illustrated), and shares with the present group the curving s-shaped stance, which is almost the trademark of these Madonnas, and allows for cascades of drapery on either side of the body. Although he principally appears to have been active in Salzburg, the Master of Seeon's celebrated Virgin and Child (Volk, loc. cit.) gives a good guide to the approximate dating of the present group, and has a somewhat comparable tall crown.
