Lot Essay

The picture was actually entitled Shy Sitters when exhibited at Manchester in 1899, but A Shy Sitter was the title inscribed on the back and there certainly seems to be only one sitter in the picture, namely the dog. Hanson often exhibited at the Manchester and Liverpool autumn exhibitions; on this occasion he showed two works, the other being The Corsair's Bride (untraced).
