Lot Essay

In 1899 Hayllar's wife Ellen died and he left Castle Priory, the setting of so many of his genre subjects, and moved to Bournemouth. He ceased to exhibit at the Royal Academy and restriced himself to small landscape paintings made for his own pleasure. The present picture, though dating from 1896, anticipates these later sketches.
