King George Tubou I (1799-1893)
The paddle is sold with a note dated 3 May 1950 which reads: South Sea Paddle brought by a missionary & given to my Grandparents in Macclesfield about the middle of the 19th Century. It had belonged to King George of Tonga.
The missionary referred to is believed to have been the Rev. John Thomas (1797-1851) who went to Tonga in 1826 and returned to England in 1852, seven years after King George Tubou acceded to the throne.
