Lot Essay

Although not an absolutely typical Chinese form, the polish of the present jade dish conforms entirely to what is known about Chinese jade of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and the unusual foot may indicate that it was always intended for the export market. The gilded foliate pattern, however, is related to gold inlay decoration from India, and the silver-gilt foot is of European origin.
