Lot Essay

The original is recorded as having been excavated at Hadrian's Villa in 1736, and is now in the Musei Capitolini. It was particularly admired because of the fact that it was carved out of an unusually large block of close-grained dark-red marble (Haskell and Penny, loc. cit.).
