Lot Essay

An unusual composition in Western art, possibly inspired by Byzantine iconography. The figures depicted seem to include all the standard popular saints of the Church. It is notable that St.Mark occupies a central place below the Trinity, reinforcing our belief that the artist may be Venetian. In spite of the very small representation the figures are well drawn, the faces showing much character.

There are traces of glue on the verso suggesting that the painting was intended for mounting on a wooden panel
