Lot Essay

PROVENANCE: Probably written on the occasion of the consecration of the church of St. Sebaldus, patron saint of Nuremberg, in 1377 (a 15th century insertion in the last quire on f.105 refers to this). Dated by the scribe at end of the Psalms 'in vigil Fabiani & Sebastiani', i.e. 20 January 1378. Inscribed at head of f.1 in a 15th-century hand 'Liber Sancti petri ...'

TEXT: The text is in middle-high German, with the incipit to each Psalm in Latin. The sequence of the Psalms is unusual. Two leaves of early 15th-century notes are bound between quire 12 and 13, containing notes in Latin on the pilgrimage to St. Sebaldus' relics in Nuremberg, and a devotional poem, slightly later prayers on the last two leaves (final 2 leaves lacking).
