Lot Essay

Giuseppe Antonio Sartori, together with his architect-brother Domenico, completed the splendid high altar of Trent Cathedral in 1739. The present piece, which he signed in the following year, was carved for Domenico Antonio de Tono (Thun), the Prince-Bishop of Trent. It is not inconceivable that this charming piece, which was no doubt intended to adorn the Prince-Bishop's desk, was a gift to thank him for the larger commission.
