Merian first published his version of these famous Basel wall-paintings in 1649. Dating from the fifteenth century, they had undergone restoration in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Although both Holbein's Renaissance woodcut Dance of Death series and Merian's Baroque etched series obviously lent themselves to colouring, hand-coloured impressions appear to be extremely rare
