Although previously thought to have been used by the Fijian priests for oil, Fergus Clunie has assured us that they were used in Fiji for the ritual drinking of yanggona. In the case of a bowl of this form fern leaves would probably have been laid over the beverage and the priest would have drunk the decoction through a straw.
