The following twenty-four lots were collected by George Eliot, M.D., M.R.C.S.E. (1854-1920), an amateur anthropologist and genealogist who lived and practised in Grenfell, Saskatchewan. Dr. Eliot's study of North American Indian groups was probably stimulated by the example of his great-great-great-great-uncle, the Rev. John Eliot, "the Indian Apostle" (1604-90), whose life is told by Martin Moore in Memoir of Eliot, apostle to the North American Indians (Boston, 1842). George Eliot was the son of Major-General John Eliot (1820-86) of the Royal Artillery and sometime Bengal R.A., a descendant of Thomas Elyot (sic.) of Green Place and Wonersh, Surrey (d.1467). The lots are sent for sale by George Eliot's great-great-nephew
