Lot Essay

Philip Pouncey proposed the attribution to Giuseppe Salviati. The drawing is comparable with a study of Saint Paul in a private collection, Paris related to the Pala Valier of circa 1560 in Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Venice, D. McTavish, Giuseppe Porta called Giuseppe Salviati, New York and London, 1981, nos. 28 and 33 respectively, both illustrated. The technique of the present drawing is similar to the Mises presenting a large Pomegranate to King Artaxerxes at Besançon and a Lucretia in The Ashmolean Museum which are datable to the mid 1550s
