Lot Essay
In this drawing the upturned head of the Saint and the attribute, an ox at his feet, recall a picture dated 1611, now in the Collegio Notarile, Piacenza, G.-P. Bernini, Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647), Parma, 1982, fig. 17. The composition, figure types, angular draperies and the dramatic lighting in this study are comparable with two altarpieces painted for two Piacentine churches, San Lorenzo and San Pietro, dating from 1611-2, G.-P. Bernini, op. cit., figs. 21-2. The technique of the present drawing, with the painterly use of white heightening and wash on coloured paper is akin to a study for a wall decoration in the Louvre, R. Bacon and J. Bean [eds.], Le Dessin à Rome and XVIIe Siécle, Paris, 1988, no. 84, illustrated and colour detail on cover
