Professor Mahoney relates this to two drawings of similar subjects of circa 1666 at Frankfurt and Leipzig, M. Mahoney, op. cit., nos. 79.4-5. Anthony Blunt's suggestion that the subject is the nursing of Cyrus seems plausible, as there is only one child suckling from a wolf in this study, and the woman in the background is restraining a frightened sheep
