Professor Mahoney suggests that this dates from Rosa's Florentine period, 1640-9. The pointing youth at the lower right is similar to a full length figure in a drawing from the Odescalchi Collection sold at Galerie Gerda Bassenge, Berlin, M. Mahoney, op. cit., no. 25.7, illustrated
