Lot Essay

The present plaque is typical of Nardon Penicaud's workshop in the bold outlines of the figures of Christ, Peter, James and John, and also in the colour of the enamel: the faces having a somewhat violet hue, the deep, rich blues and the gilded clouds scudding across the sky. The compostion of the present plaque is copied from an engraving after Albrecht Dürer's woodcuts of the 'Little Passion' (c.f. Verdier, no. 122, op.cit.).
