Of oval domed form, the pierced eyes with raised rims within whitened surrounds, the pierced mouth with notched borders, the slender nose with pierced nostrils, a double row of dots incised across the forehead and an additional row above the left-hand side, triple horizontal scarifications to each cheek, pierced below the small ears and about the border, pale to reddish-brown patina

Lot Essay

Rather than from the Lega themselves, this mask may be from one of the many groups influenced by Lega art, perhaps from the Nyindu or another group to the south-east of the Lega proper. Amongst the Lega each member of the yananio grade owned a wooden mask for use in the lukwakongo rites leading to membership in lutumbo lwa yananio (see Biebuyck, 1973, e.g. Pl.62)
