Lot Essay

Adrien-Jospeh Anrion (1730-1773) studied under Laurent Delvaux, after which he travelled to Italy. On his return to Brussels, he worked on the palace being built for Charles de Lorraine, under the direction of the architect Laurent-François Dewez. His most important work for the Prince's palace was the bronze reliefs with scenes from the Labours of Hercules for the Grand Staircase.
The best of his statues is considered to be his figure of Religion, made for the Abbey of Afflighem in 1769, for which the terracotta model, dated 1765, is in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Brussels. From Devigne's description (op.cit.) this statue is similar to the present allegorical figure.
