Lot Essay

The Rev. John Clowes was a friend of John Flaxman (1755-1826), who designed and executed his funeral monument in the Church of St. John's, Manchester, of which Clowes was the Rector. They shared an interest in Swedenborgianism (cf. Irwin, op.cit.).
Faustina Prima AD 138-140/1 was the wife of the Emperor Antoninus Pius and mother of Faustina II, who later married Marcus Aurelius. She is remembered partly by the celebrated Temple of Antoninus and Faustina built as a memorial to her by her devoted husband.
Plotina, wife of Emperor Trajan, was Empress from AD 98-117. She was responsible for securing her husband's adopted son, the celebrated Emperor Hadrian, as Emperor after Trajan died in AD 117. She died shortly afterwards in AD 122.
