Ceccini (1562-1612) was a pupil of the architect Dosio active alongside him from the 1580s. He carved a number of busts of the Virgin Mary, Christ and other saints. One, closely similar to the present weathered head is in Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. It formerly decorated the west wing of the cloister (see Literature), and was commissioned in the 1590s. Another was sold at Christie's, Rome, some years ago. The present, disembodied, head may once have had shoulders covered with a mantle, which were carved from a differently coloured marble.
