This chair is very similar to a set of armchairs designed by A.W.N. Pugin circa 1837 for Charles Scarisbrick of Scarisbrick Hall, Ormskirk, one of which is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (S. Jervis, Victorian Furniture, 1968, pl.29)
Scarisbrick Hall was remodelled between 1837 and 1845 to the designs of A.W.N. Pugin for Charles Scarisbrick. After his death in 1860 it was altered for his sister Anne, Lady Scarisbrick by Pugin's son Edward Welby Pugin (see M. Girouard, The Victorian Country House, 1979, pp.110-119)
A very similar chair was sold in these Rooms, 25 June 1987, lot 26
