Lot Essay

The basic elements of the design of these chairs are taken from two designs by Robert Manwaring, first published by the print seller Robert Sayer in Genteel Household Furniture in the Present Taste, London, 1765, pl. 15. The rosette in the backs of the present lot is a simplication of that on one Gothic chair and the cluster-column leg appears on the other. A very similar chair, possibly from the same set but with a differently carved cartouche in the arms, was sold by the Executors of the late Mrs. D. Upjolin in these Rooms, 26 February 1981, lot 60. A set of eight similar chairs, including two armchairs, with the same quatrefoil panelling to the frame, was sold by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Davies, Charleville, Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, Christie's house sale, 23 January 1978, lot 97
