Despite similarities to lot 93 in this sale, particularly the harewood panels with floral trails, this commode does not seem to be related to the group mentioned in that note.

Lot Essay

This commode relates to an unattributed group of serpentine-topped commodes usually distinguishable by specimen wood fluting to the frieze. Although the majority of the recorded examples have an inlaid-fluting frieze on front and sides, and considerably more ambitious neo-classical marquetry, the proportions and apron of the present lot seem related. The group seems to be almost exclusively veneered in harewood with rosewood crossbanding. A direct connection seems unlikely because almost all the group have the distinctive and continental feature of the apron being incorporated into the bottom drawer-front (e.g. those sold by Major-General Sir George Burns, North Mymms Park, Hatfield, Christie's house sale, 24 September 1979, lot 160; the Executors of the late G. A. V. Duckworth, Esq., Orchardleigh Park, Frome, Christie's house sale, 24 September 1987, lot 266; and that commode offered by the Executors of Alan Searle, Esq., Sotheby's London, 24 November 1987, lot 266). A commode that is more closely related to the present lot in that its apron is part of the carcass and it is of a darker stained harewood, was sold by the Executors of the late Miss A. M. Kendall, in these Rooms, 25 February 1960.
