Lot Essay

This Jacobean 'refectory' table made of indigenous British oak popularised with George Bullock (d. 1818) in the style promoted by Henry Shaw and Richard Bridgens, authors of Furniture with candelabrum and interior decoration designed by R. Bridgens, 1825-26, which includes Ancient Examples ... the style prevalent in England during the Reigns of Elizabeth and James I... Bullock and Bridges worked at Abbotsford, Aston and Battle and their relationship is discussed by C. Wainwright in George Bullock Cabinet-Maker, exh. cat., London, 1988, pp. 13-39.

A design in the R.I.B.A. by Sir Jeffry Wyattville (d. 1840) for a porter's table for Ashbridge Park, Hertfordshire, has a similar gothic octagonal support (see: J. Lever, Architects Designs for Furniture, London, 1982, p. 61, no. 26)
