Lot Essay

These fish would have come from vessels richly decorated with appliqués of marine creatures, the creatures, in almost full relief, being fused to the exterior; they were arranged from the top to the bottom of the vessel in correct positions according to their depth of habitat. For an almost complete example, see the beaker of clear glass with marine animals, found in Cologne and now in the Römische Germanisches Museen (no. 63.53) and published in J.G.S., VII, 1965. For the appliqués, cf., Dusseldorf, no. 105; R.W.S, nos 334-336
