Lot Essay

Sir Francis Graham Moon (1796-1871) was a printseller and publisher on a large scale. One of his most celebrated publications was David Roberts's 'Sketches in the Holy Land'. In 1830 he was elected a common councillor, and in 1854 he became Lord Mayor. In this function he received the Emperor and Empress of the French at the Guildhall in 1855 and in the same year was created a Baronet. Shortly afterwards, when Moon visited Paris, the Emperor made him a chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur
