Lot Essay

Robert-Joseph Auguste became one of the leading goldsmiths of France in the 18th century. He worked for Louis XV, his wife Mme de Pampadour, Christian VII, King of Denmark, Catherine the Great and the King of Portugal. He is best known for his grandiose dinner services, from which this lot probably once formed part.

A similar oil and vinegar stand, also by Auguste, Paris, 1775 was in the collection of D. David-Weill, 4th May 1972, lot 1.
