Hudson painted Tyrell after his return from the West Indies in 1759, during which commission the Admiral lost three fingers from his right hand when his ship, the 'Buckingham', was in action with the French ship 'Florissant'. Other versions of this portrait are recorded, but this may be the original, as the sitter is wearing Captain's full dress uniform of 1748-67, as he is in the mezzotint; a version in the National Maritime Museum show him only in flag officer's uniform
