The sitters in this portrait were the surviving children of Humphrey and Elizabeth Senhouse of Netherhall, Cumberland. Their fourth child Ellen died young; Humphrey, seen here seated with the greyhound, died in 1834 at the age of 25. Elizabeth, the eldest daughter and heiress, married Joseph Pocklington who assumed the name and arms of Senhouse, an old Cumberland family. A portrait of William Senhouse (1741-1800), great-uncle of the children, by George Romney was sold in these Rooms, 16th November, 1991, lot 20.
