Lot Essay

Harriet Georgiana Louisa, was the eldest daughter of James, 2nd Marquess and 1st Duke of Abercorn, and his wife Lady Louisa Jane Russell, second daughter of John, 6th Duke of Bedford. On 10 April 1855 she married Thomas George, 2nd Earl of Lichfield; they had several children. She died on 23 April 1913 and the Earl died on 7 January 1892 when their eldest son Thomas Francis succeeded as 3rd Earl of Lichfield.

In November 1827 Sir Walter Scott recorded meeting Landseer in the Duchess of Bedford's entourage on their return from the Doune, a hunting lodge near Aviemore. This was above the valley of Glenfeshie where the Duchess had her series of makeshift huts where she and her close friends used to spend much of their time when they were in Scotland. Her husband, the 6th Duke, was Landseer's most important early patron.
