Lot Essay

A drawing of the same subject with Saint Jerome in a wooded landscape was in the Mayer collection, sold at C.G. Boerner, 19-20 March 1914, lot 162. The buildings in the background are inspired by Dürer prints such as Saint Eustace and the Sea Monster (Bartsch 57 and 71). Similar mills and farmhouses are found in the background of landscapes in the Uffizi and the Albertina, E. Saccomani, Domenico Campagnola Disegnatore di 'Paesi': Dagli Esordi alla Prima Maturità, Arte Veneta, XXXVI, 1982, figs. 8, 11 and 18
