A modello for the fresco of Phanes in the Sala dell'Udienza in Palazzo Vecchio. Salviati was commissioned by Cosimo I in 1543 to decorate the audience chamber with scenes from the life of Camillus. The present drawing is related to the right end of the north wall, in one of the bays between the windows. Dr. Hofmeister Cheney describes the figure of Phanes: 'an Orphic time deity related to Aion, or abstract, eternal time. He is a winged male figure with a snake wrapped about his body. He stands in fire and carries the sun on his head. In his left hand he holds a spear; in his right, arrows. He is surrounded by the Zodiac ... Salviati's representation is almost identical with an antique relief now in the Galleria Estense, Modena', I. Hofmeister Cheney, Francesco Salviati, 1963, II, p. 368
