The present sheet belongs to a series of about four hundred portraits, the chronology of which has been reconstructed from the date and numbers inscribed by the artist at the bottom of each drawing by J.T. Spike, Baroque Portraits in Italy: Works from North American Collections, Saratoga, 1985, pp. 18-9. The series was recorded by Baglione as being in the possession of Prince Borghese in 1642 and was last seen complete by P.J. Mariette at the D'Aubigny sale in 1747
