Lot Essay

Four other versions of this composition are known: in the Ashmolean Museum (Parker 170), the Uffizi (photograph Witt Library under Domenichino), the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1915.1246), and one sold in these Rooms, 4 July 1984, lot 34. Hugh Macandrew suggested that the Woodner drawing was the original by Annibale.
