Probably in 1594, King Henri IV commissioned a large marble statue of Perseus to be placed at the top of a rock in the middle of a basin in the oval courtyard at Fontainebleau. In the same year, the King was depicted in an engraving as Perseus delivering France, adding a new mythological dimension to the portrayal of the King of France, F.
