Lot Essay

This drawing is a preparatory study in the same sense for Gillot's print Feste de Diane, one of a series of four Bacchanales, 'inventé, peint et gravé par C. Gillot', and published by Pierre de Rochefort in the early 18th Century. Other studies for this series are at Yale and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille, E. Haverkamp-Begemann and A.S. Logan, op. cit., p. 28, fig. 2, pl. 27. A study for the Feste de Faune is mentioned in a sale catalogue, (Paris, 4 May 1843, lot 115), but its present whereabouts are unknown
