Lot Essay

Inspired by the Ignudi of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, this sheet is comparable to a drawing in the Alsdorf Collection at Winnetka, G. Schiff, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Zürich, 1973, no. 1173, illustrated, and another sold in these Rooms, 9 Dec. 1980, lot 273, illustrated. Dr. Schiff would date these sheets to around 1795, well after the artist's return from Italy. A drawing copied directly after the Josaphat lunette of a man writing, in the Kunsthaus, Zürich, dates from the Italian period
